Our Story.
Alexandra grew up in Brussels with a Dutch dad and a French mom, which basically means she was raised with way too many opinions about wine, cheese, and cycling. After studying hospitality in The Hague, she packed her bags (again) and moved to Madrid for a master’s in Corporate Marketing & Communications, because why live in one country when you can try them all?
Janis was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where he spent his childhood perfecting his arepa skills. His family later moved first to the U.S. and then back to Latvia, where things got a little colder and a lot more Baltic. He studied Product Design in San Francisco (yes, he can actually build furniture, no, we don’t always trust him with an Allen key or any key, really).
Through Janis’ brother Andrejs, our paths crossed in Madrid in late 2019. What started as a few casual conversations (and Janis trying to impress with his dance moves) turned into something more, just in time for Spain’s big lockdown. Suddenly, Alexandra was back in Belgium, Janis was in Latvia, and we became experts in long-distance romance powered by FaceTime marathons and questionable Wi-Fi.
Six months of long-distance followed. At this point, we had more airline tickets than actual photos together, and our phones were permanently glued to FaceTime. Eventually, the back-and-forth got old, and Alexandra landed a job in Amsterdam. Janis came along “just to help her settle in” with a small suitcase, one pair of pants, and two shirts… and then simply never left. Since 2021, Amsterdam has been our home, and it’s where we’ve built our life together.
Together, we’ve built traditions of our own: brunches that are never skipped, car rides with Avril Lavigne sing-alongs, McDonald’s pit stops on the way to Belgium, binge-watching reality TV (always checking Rotten Tomatoes first for ratings), and (despite our best intentions) usually finding a better excuse than going to the gym.
We’re also infamous for being the worst team at board games like Codenames or Pictionary (our brains just don’t work the same way!), yet somehow we always end up thinking the same thing at the same time.
From padel matches and cycling adventures to Janis’ legendary spritz-making skills, life together is never boring. And if Janis takes care of our future family the way he takes care of our plants, Alexandra knows she can rest assured.
